Cheese Cake - 15months old

Daddy bought this Cookies Cheese Cake from Bakezin. We lit up the candle for fun, sang the birthday song and let little Zo Ee blew it. This is Zo Ee's first taste of a Cheese Cake and she loved it so much, and kept asking for more.

I love you - 15months old

Mummy is overjoyed upon hearing little Zo Ee uttered, " I uf you!" to Mummy. Ho! Ho! Ho!
Tonight, Mummy had a splendid idea, instead of telling Zo Ee, " Mummy loves you." or " Mummy loves Zo Ee.", Mummy thought now is the time to tell her, " I love you." instead so that little Zo Ee will utter these to Mummy one day. Surprisingly, Mummy need not wait long. Upon hearing Mummy said, "I love you." followed by a kiss on her forehead, little Zo Ee immediately uttered, " I uf you." back to Mummy with a smile on her face. Estatic me was shock and speechless.
Although little Zo Ee was repeating them after Mummy, but from my everyday observation, little Zo Ee does understand language well and I believe that little Zo Ee was not anyhow repeating words randomly(not my Zo Ee) but did utter them with understanding. Moreover all this while, little Zo Ee's daily communication skill has proven to us that she is able to use words or short sentences correctly.

Reciting A-Z - 15months old

Yes! Yes! Yes! Little Zo Ee was so awake in bed just now and started to recite her alphabet again. This time, she recited the entire set; A to Z perfectly like this, " A, B, C, D,...,W, X, Y, Z ". She was reciting them much clearer now with improved pronunciation but is still saying W in her funny way, "da biu biu" (W).

Short Sentences - 15months old

Am I amazed seeing my little 15-months old reading short sentences? Yes, I would be if it is another toddler but not really when it comes to my little Zo Ee. Basically, with her vast vocabulary (>500words), she should be able to read many sentences, not limited to 3 or 4 words sentences only but even longer ones.

The only obstacle that I do notice is that reading long sentences are very tiring and too demanding for a little 15-months old. That’s why little Zo Ee needs to gain her reading stamina slowly. After weeks of Mummy reading short sentences to her, few weeks ago, on a few occasions, little Zo Ee was reading aloud short sentences. Nevertheless, she seems to be more ready after reaching her 15-months old mark, more ready to venture all by herself; therefore willingly reading more short sentences lately. On a few occasions, Mummy even spotted little Zo Ee reading aloud a full short sentence to herself, eg. “Spiders live in trees.”

When little Zo Ee is in a good mood, she even has the stamina to read a whole book without taking any break. One good example is this book on spider which we borrowed few days ago (Title : Spin, spider, spin! By Rau), “Spiders have eight legs. Spiders have eight eyes. Spiders live in grass. Spiders live in trees. Spiders make silk. Spiders spin webs. Spiders catch bugs. Spiders eat bugs. Spin, spider, spin! “

In this video, Mummy allowed little Zo Ee freedom to read only cards that she preferred and stopped the reading session when little Zo Ee was getting a little restless. As it is extremely important not to force a child but to let her have fun and enjoy every moment of it.

World Map (3) - 15months old

Updating Little Zo Ee's progress on the world map after a month. Little Zo Ee is progressing well at a speed much depending on Mummy's mood, as occasionally Mummy is lazy to add new countries to her collection and these happen frequently during the weekends. Mummy thinks it is fine as long as both Mummy and Zo Ee are happy with the progress as we are not trying to race against time but to learn within our comfort zones. So we will take things slowly... ha! ha! ha!
16 New Countries: (total 26)

My name is Zo Ee - 15months old

This 15-months old is able to tell you her name, " Zo Ee" or in a partial sentence, " name Zo Ee." or " my Zo Ee." or " is Zo Ee." Although she is not able to reply you in the full sentence yet, "My name is Zo Ee." but she is able to read the whole of this sentence as shown in this video clip.

After watching this video of hers a few times, when Mummy asked little Zo Ee her name, she was able to reply Mummy , "My... name... is... Zo Ee." Gosh! Mummy is speechless again!!!!

Communication - 15months old

Past few months, although little Zo Ee is able to say many words, most are nouns, adjectives and some verbs. And lately, I am noticing that my little Zo Ee's expressing her herself more with words and I’m excited and enjoying every moment of it.


Scene 1
When she sees something, especially food on the dining table that she wants, she will tell Mummy, “want! want! want!” while pointing at it impatiently. When Mummy asked little Zo Ee, “ what is it that you want?” If it is in a box, little Zo Ee will read aloud the written word on it, example, “Corn Flakes” or “Corn Pops” or etc. When Mummy asked her again, “Zo Ee wants corn flakes?” Sometimes, little Zo Ee will answer, “yah” (yes) or at other times, she will answer, “Corn Flakes” instead while nodding her head for yes. After Mummy had given her some, little Zo Ee will be happily eating them. Occasionally, little Zo Ee will tell Mummy, “yummy..yummy...” . Sometimes, Mummy will ask, “Do you like your corn flakes?” and little Zo Ee will definitely answered, “yah” (yes). Whenever she finished those on her bowl, little Zo Ee will ask for more, telling Mummy, “more! more! Corn flakes!” while pointing at the box on the table again. If Mummy gives her a lot, funny Zo Ee loves to say, “many” . And when she finished those on her bowl, occasionally she says "no more" or "finished" .


Scene 2
If she does sees Mummy drinking from the mug, she will say “Mug, cold” . And definitely she wanted to touch Mummy’s mug, telling Mummy, “touch! touch!” If Mummy allows her to touch it, she will be happily telling Mummy, “noopy” (Snoopy on the Mug), “black, white” . And now she knows that Snoopy is a dog and not a cow, as earlier she had misunderstood that the illustration on Mummy’s mug was a cow, and used to tell Mummy, “cow, moo…”

Evolving language skills - 15months old

One simple example of Zo Ee's evolving language skills is the word "cat" . Although Zo Ee can recognize the word "cat" months ago (before she reached 1 years old) but being able to pronounce it is a different challenge. Initially, she chose the easier sound of the two, “mao” rather than the word "cat" to represent cat. Each time she sees a cat, she will say “mao” . As her number of sounds improved, she is able to say “cat” whenever she sees one, and thus “mao” will be the sound that a cat makes. So, she will say “cat” while pointing at the cat before telling us that a cat says “mao…” . And now, she can pronounce it perfectly, “meow….” just like us.

When I Least Expect - 15months old

Lately, Little Zo Ee is giving me loads of surprises with her language skill, especially when I least expect it from her; to say or read a new word. Merely, 3 days past her 15-months old mark, she has already read aloud / spoken quite a number of new 2 syllables words: Greenland, pocket, rabbit, g-raffe (giraffe), barney, smelly, yogurt, no more, many, kitchen, mammals, Dettol, egg yolk, egg white, dentist, teether, bean curd, tortoise, bubble and winter. She is even able to read this short sentence, “ Giraffe is so cute.”

Scene 1:
While we were out last weekend, there was this car with Barney and his friends. So out of curiousity, we asked little Zo Ee, “ Zo Ee, who is that?” Without hesitation, little Zo Ee replied, “ Barney! ” She does recognize Barney although she is not really a Barney's fan.

Scene 2:
Since now approaching Singapore National Day's celebration, flags can be seen everywhere. Daddy and Zo Ee were passing by a cake shop that was having some promotion with the lion on its banner. And when little Zo Ee saw it, she read aloud to daddy,
“ Happy Lion.”

Scene 3:
One afternoon, while Mummy and little Zo Ee were spending some time together in the living room, suddenly little Zo Ee talked to Mummy, “Kitchen” while pointing at the kitchen. And surprised Mummy really lost her words.

Scene 4:
While Mummy was bathing little Zo Ee in the bathroom, little Zo Ee read aloud “Dettol” when she saw the dettol body wash (we just switched to this new brand after many years using Dove but I think I still prefer Dove). So my little observant Zo Ee spotted the new item in the bathroom. And this is just another incident where little Zo Ee was able to read a new word all by herself.

Scene 5:
This week, little Zo Ee is reading a book titled Dentist. She seems to love this book a lot, and after a few days browsing it, out of a sudden she read aloud to Mummy, “Dentist” when she saw this particular book on the sofa. Again, Mummy was speechless!

Scene 6:
While sitting little Zo Ee down onto her high chair for dinner, little Zo Ee saw the steamed fish with bean curd on the dining table. And immediately, she wanted to have some, telling us, “bean curd, bean curd” while pointing at them. Gosh, although she knows that it was called bean curd, but we don’t expect her to say it, other than her usual way, “bean, bean”.

Little Zo Ee just finished her lunch but she still insisted for some bread when she saw them on the dining table. So the tired Zo Ee ended up...sleeping with her bread in one hand!

2 syllables words - 15months old

I guess my little Zo Ee knows enough of her 1 syllable words (>400 words) for the past few months, and I can see that she is moving on to mastering more 2 syllables words lately. Everyday, she surprises me with her new vocabulary.
Unlike the past, Zo Ee is very willing in repeating words after me now. Whenever little Zo Ee couldn’t get them right, especially those 2 syllables words, Mummy will split the words into two parts before repeating each sound clearly for her, eg. “bas…ket…” I do notice that if I break the words into two distinguishable sound while saying them equally clear, little Zo Ee can learn them quickly. At first, she finds it challenging to pronounce it and may need loads of encouragement, where Mummy will say the initial sound, eg. “bas…” and my little Zo Ee will never hesitate to complete the other half, “ket...” . For each successful repetition, I praised her. Soon, she will have the confident to say the word all by herself, splitting them apart like Mummy does, “bas….ket” . As she gets more familiar, she has no problem pronouncing it perfectly like us. The trick is, it is important for little Zo Ee to hear, learn and differentiate the sound clearly. Furthermore, with her many 1 syllable words, it is easy for her to put two sounds together to form a new 2 syllables words. Eg. Starfish, playground, bluejay, hotdog etc.

Milestones - 14 months old

Motor skill

  • Walking: stable while carrying books or a bag of toys in her hand.
  • Running : occasionally especially at the playground
  • Kicking a ball without support
  • Trying to climb the slide at the playground
  • Doing free fall on Mummy’s bed
  • Tip-toeing to reach for higher height.
  • All four on the floor while retrieving toys under the sofa.
  • Pushing stools/stroller around
  • Squat down to pick up an object/toy

Language

  • A big leap in language development: saying and reading more than 500words. Reading short sentences.
  • Read with better understanding. Chuckles at funny ideas.
  • She can recognize more than 1000 written words. (rough estimation) New vocabulary: new shapes, more nouns and action words.
  • Actively communicating, naming and pointing at objects and colours. Eg. “Moon, white, circle” or “lion, roar, ummph!!!” or “car, red, beep-beep” , “dustbin, green, mell(smelly)” , “bear, grr…, hug” , “frog, eyes (big eyes), jump” , “cat, black, meow” etc.
  • Pronouncing her own name, “Zo Ee”
  • Says “me” after a sneeze. (excuse me)
  • Knows her opposites well, eg. Mummy asked, “The opposite of happy is?” Zo Ee will answered, “sad” . Even if Mummy were to reverse the question, little Zo Ee will still get them correct. (video attached at the end of this blog)
  • Understand and can reply accurately on these questions: “What colour is a particular object?” or “What is the shape of a particular object?” or “What do you want?” or “Would you like Mummy to help you?” or "What are you doing?" or "What are you playing with?" or "Would you like Mummy to read to you?" or "Would you like to have your breakfast/lunch/dinner/milk/etc?" or "Do you want to go to the playground/go out with Mummy?" etc.

Indicating want:

  • Saying more words with gestures to make her needs known, eg.“bread”, "milk”, “rice”, “fish”, “egg”, “bun”, “fruit”, “pear”, “cheese”, etc (know most food by their names) , “bao-bao” (carry), “no” , “yes” , “touch” , etc.
  • When Mummy says “no touch” , little Zo Ee will indicate her interest in touching a particular object by saying “touch, touch”

Numbers/maths

  • Recognize numbers
  • Reciting skill: able to recite 1 – 10 in the correct order
  • Learning 4-steps maths equations. (Combination of addition with subtraction or multiplication with division.)
Love
  • To browse books alone or with company(Mummy or Daddy), especially when awake in the morning and just before bedtime. (video attached at the end of this blog)
  • To dance along with music, moving her head, body, hands and legs.
  • Loves surprises.
Fine motor skills
  • Fit all numbers(0-9) back into the floor mats
  • Matching shapes (oval, square)

  • Self-feeding with a spoon with Mummy’s help (putting food onto her spoon)

  • Trying to remove tubes' caps, eg. A tube of cream. While asking Mummy to help her, little Zo Ee tries to unscrew/open the cap herself while saying, “pen” (open)

  • Brushing her teeth. (of course not clean)

Emotion

  • Initiate friendship : walking or running after little kids (older than her), calling them "jie-jie" or "ge-ge" spontaneously. Saying “Hi!” and “bye” to adults while waving her hand (without being told to most of the time).
  • Loves to hug (hugging most of her toys, even trying to hug Mummy’s/Daddy's photos)
  • Playful and happy girl
Senses
  • Sings ABC song while playing her keyboard.
  • Enjoys nice music, even Mummy’s choice of songs (Vocal, Jazz) or classical more than her nursery rhymes.
  • Enjoys comfort objects: blanket, soft toy, or just leaning onto us
  • Describing "Hot " or "cold" (feels with hands)
  • Telling Mummy, “dustbin smell” (smelly dustbin)
  • More observant; seeing details on books, toys and surroundings
  • If she smells something strong, she will be telling Mummy, “mell” (smell)
  • Recognized birds chirping. When Mummy asked, “what is that sound?” Zo Ee will reply, “bird!”
  • Occasionally telling Mummy, “poo, poo” while pulling at her diaper due to the discomfort of a dirty diaper.


Memory

  • World Map: can locate 21 countries (Alaska, USA, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Greenland, Antarctica, Spain, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Madagascar, Afghanistan, India, Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand) (as on 10/7/2009)
  • Reciting skill: able to recite 1 – 10 in the correct order. Able to recite most alphabets in sequence in a smaller group, eg. A-L or L-Z.
  • Able to fill in the blank verbally for the missing numbers or alphabet correctly. Eg. Mummy and Zo Ee reciting alternately, “1” , “2” , “3” , “4” …. Or “A” , “B” , “C” , “D” ,….. (video attached at the end of this blog)
  • Recognize all her additional new shapes (Parallelogram, Pentagon, Heptagon, Quadrilateral, Polygon, Trapezium, Hexagon, Octagon, Semicircle and Cross)
  • Recognize more people from photos.
  • Always reminding Mummy that she wanted to wash her hands after eating by saying, “wash, wash” while rubbing her hands.

Intellectual skill

  • Recognize Minnie Mouse as “Mou” (mouse), although Mummy and Daddy haven’t introduced her to this cartoon character. But past few days, she is calling it "Minnie" instead.
  • Refuses to leave a place, eg. the supermarket or playground. When daddy tells her, “Daddy bao bao.” Immediately, little Zo Ee will sit on the floor and cry – indicating her dislikes of leaving the place.
  • Can understand many instructions. Eg. “Stop the music.” Little Zo Ee will press the stop key at her keyboard. (video attached at the end of this blog)
  • Fit all numbers back into the floor mat
  • Matching shapes (oval, circle)
  • Completed her shape sorters (triangle, square, circle, cross, rectangle) and (star, triangle, flower shape). (video attached at the end of this blog)
  • Will put things back at their original places while saying, “back” (put it back)
  • Pretend to dial and chat on the toy telephone, saying “Haro” (hello) or “hi” or “bye” and some funny language sound (imitating chatting).
  • Recognized herself in her younger day’s videos, chuckles at them too.
  • Pretend to sneeze “ah cooo…”
  • Knocking at the doors while saying “knock, knock”
  • Turning on/off the torchlight while saying “on” or “off” or “light”
  • Loves to be part of the family by imitating our actions or words, eg. Eating with a spoon, wearing a hairband/hairclip.
  • Can easily understand and grasped any simple new concept. Eg. Matching shapes.

Dinner at Pastamania – 14months old

We had our dinner at Pastamania in a nearby shopping mall just now, and we were sitting next to a family of four; mother, father and two primary school girls. Since the younger girl was sitting near to little Zo Ee, little Zo Ee was excited and calling her “jie-jie” in a loud voice. And when Mummy asked little Zo Ee what colour was the jie-jie wearing? Little Zo Ee answered Mummy, “pink!” with a voice loud enough to be heard by the rest of the family. Thorough the dinner, little Zo Ee was active and talkative, saying many words. And the girls’ father found Zo Ee cute, and couldn’t resist in asking us about Zo Ee’s age. When we told him that little Zo Ee is 15months old. ( To be exact, will be 15months old tomorrow.), he was amazed at the number of words already said by little Zo Ee and he was trying to count them to his wife. The girls’ mother thought little Zo Ee was around 20months old but was surprised that she is much younger than her expectation. And the girls’ mother commented, “She is already saying a lot.“ “Well, we couldn’t deny that.” : ) Throughout the dinner, the girls’ father was all ears on little Zo Ee. And when they were finally leaving, little Zo Ee waved bye to them, which amazed them more.

Actually, what the girls’ parents heard was only a minute fraction of Zo Ee’s vast vocabulary and yet they were already so excited and amazed. I think they will fall off their chairs if I were to tell them that little Zo Ee can say and read about 500 words now. Hee ! Hee! Hee!
And on our way home, a lady in her late forties found little Zo Ee cute too, especially with her many words and body language. She too commented that little Zo Ee is already saying a lot. In fact, even Mummy and Daddy find little Zo Ee extremely talkative today, saying more than her usual self.

Zo Ee says II - 14months old

Moon
While we were having a walk after dinner, little Zo Ee said, "oon" while pointing at the moon in the sky. When Mummy replied her, "Yes, it is a moon". Then little Zo Ee added more to the conversation, "white" and again pointing towards the moon in the sky. As Mummy usual replied, "Yes, the moon looks white." Then little Zo Ee continued, "cle-cle (circle)". Oops...look what little Zo Ee is trying to tell Mummy here, is it " A white circle moon." or "The moon is white in colour and it looks like a circle." ?
Winter
When Zo Ee came across the picture of the winter on a book, little Zo Ee told Mummy, "win" (winter) while pointing at it. After Mummy replied her, "Yes, that is winter." Again little Zo Ee tried to continue her conversation, "cold" while holding both her hands together, her little sign for cold. And when Mummy agreed with her, "Yes, winter is very cold." Little Zo Ee continued, "white" while pointing at the picture again. Hmm... she must be thinking that "Winter is cold and white." Smart girl huh....although she has not experience a real winter yet.

Little Zo Ee is able to recite one to ten now, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10" Or filling in the missing numbers, eg. when Mummy said, "1" , little Zo Ee continued, "2" , then Mummy said, "3" , little Zo Ee will say, "4" , and it went up to 10. This also applied to alphabet, "A" , "B" , "C" , "D" , "E" , ........ "U" , "V" , "W" , "X" , "Y" , "Z" .

Read aloud,say & sentences - 14months old

I have been following little Zo Ee's language learning curve; she used to double the amount of words each month for the past months and with improved pronunciation of old words. But there is a sudden leap in the number of words that little Zo Ee is able to say and read aloud this month. I had counted (may miss some) and the total came out to be 256 one syllable words and 22 two syllables ords; 278 new words for this month alone and she has not even turn 15-months old yet. There will be four more days before she turns 15-months old, which means more words to be added on to her collection by then. Gosh!!! this is amazing! as she already has a grand total of 405 words up to now. And it is impossible for me to follow up closely with her performance anymore, so this may be the last time that I'm counting the number of her new words.

Although little Zo Ee can read and understand many words but she is not able to verbally utilize all of them yet like the pronouns (I, he, she, we), possessive adjectives (my, his, her, our), modals(can, may), prepositions (in, on, at), articles(a, an, the). Nevertheless her vocabulary usage is growing day by day especially on nouns, verbs and adjectives. Little Zo Ee loves learning verbs the most where she enjoys acting them out. Moreover with these many words in her collection, I'm not surprise, in fact, little Zo Ee is already able to read short sentences , not by herself yet but with Mummy 's help by pointing at each word, she is able to read the whole sentence. eg: " Happy baby, things that go." or " Kiss daddy." or "Go to bed." or "Look at her now, she will crawl."

Scribbling 3 - 14months old

Zo Ee said " Line!" as she scribbled along, pointing at each line drawn by her. In this video, she's naming some colours too, " red" , "black" (confused with the colour dark brown), "white" (the colour of the paper) and "pink" (the elephant on the coloured pencils box). She also said, "dot, dot" at the end of this video when Mummy requested her to do some dots for mummy.

Self-feeding - 14 months old

Little Zo Ee is able to self-feed herself with a spoon or a fork with Mummy's help (putting food onto her spoon/fork). Occasionally, this little 14 months old successfully scoping a spoonful or two of food and putting them into her mouth too. "Bravo!!! my little Zo Ee. Taking the leap to self independence. "

This is the usual scene whenever Mummy gives little Zo Ee some new food (Bee Hoon with spinach and beef). Initially, she will try putting some into her mouth but if she dislikes the taste, she refuses to eat them, end up messing up... "Really Messy!"

Seems like she doesn't like bee hoon on her first taste. Hopefully things will get better the second time and like any other time, she will love it on her third try in the future. There are some food she can accept immediately while others she needs time.


If it is her favourite food; she is a good eater, no messing up, very clean and nothing is left behind. Always asking for " more".

Pronouncing Zo Ee - 14months old

I’m so glad that my little 14months old is able to pronounce her own name, “Zo Ee” and whenever Mummy showed her the word Zo Ee, she will smile while taping at her chest, indicating that she is Zo Ee. She even recognizes herself in her younger day’s videos and chuckles cheekily as she watched them.

Daddy and Mummy were surprised when little Zo Ee mentioning “Mou! Mou!” (mouse) while pointing at the “Minnie Mouse” on her pair of shoes. Wow! We have not taught her about this cartoon character and she recognized it precisely. So the creator should be very proud that even a 14months old baby can recognize it as a mouse.

Busy Zo Ee - 14months old

My little Zo Ee is a busy toddler, just like any other toddlers her age. Every day she loves to walk around carrying things; a toy, a bag, a book, a few blocks etc. Some times she just carry them around, other times she moves them from place to place; stacking them onto a higher table while tip-toeing or placing them onto a lower shelf. Whenever she is cheeky, she throws them out of the door or onto the kitchen floor through the safety gate. She even tries her hands on heavy container like her toy box. Strong Zo Ee managed to lift it up and even walked a step or two before dropping it onto the floor. Phew! Luckily it did not land onto her feet.
Lately Zo Ee loves to say “drop” whenever she drops something onto the floor or “hug” whenever she feels like hugging a toy or her bear while walking. She even hugs her teether penguin, telling Mummy, “Hug Penguin”. Funny!
Whenever little Zo Ee gets the opportunity to mess up Mummy’s bedroom, Mummy will be telling her, “Out! Out! Out!’ or "Go! Go! Go!" or "Quick! Quick! Quick!" while trying to drive her out of the bedroom. After hearing these many times, now little Zo Ee will either repeat or try to predict my words out loud while walking out of the room. If Mummy instructed her to go out, “Out! Out! Out!” , sometimes little Zo Ee will imitate Mummy, “Out! Out! Out!” and other times, Zo Ee will say “Go!, Go!, Go!” or “Quick! Quick! Quick!”. Or if Mummy says “Go!, Go!, Go!” , little Zo Ee will answer Mummy, “Out! Out! Out!” as she moved out of the bedroom cheekily or vice versa.
Basically, throughout the day, busy Zo Ee will be walking around stopping by only to browse her books , exploring new things or to play her toys.
