Although daddy has wanted to set up a bookshelf for Zo Ee months ago, and I did have the same idea too since I read the book on "How to raise an amazing child - Montessori way" but we were just too busy to materialize it and not until now that I finally managed to set up a small bookshelf in the living room for little Zo Ee to keep her growing books collection. This will be a good start to guide her in tidying and keeping her books orderly (neat and tidy). I have started in reminding little Zo Ee that she will take and read one book at a time, and she will have to put it back onto the shelf before getting a new one. Of course, it is impossible for little Zo Ee to follow to this new rule immediately, but Mummy will be patiently guiding and reminding her from now on. "Practise! Practise! is the key to success." This idea is just exactly like putting things back to their original locations which little Zo Ee has been complying too with certain objects in the house like the tv and video remote controls, where most of the time. she will put them back onto their holder .
Zo Ee's view of this new bookshelf:
Day 1
Of course, little Zo Ee was extremely excited seeing her books being orderly arranged in it. On the very first day itself, she impatiently removed all the books (throwing them onto the floor) before happily re-arranging and putting them back onto the shelf. Each time, she wanted a book or is looking for one, she will throw out those that she has no interest at. She still needs to see the cover page in order to recognize and choose her book of choice. So, the presence of this bookshelf created more mess than usual. But Mummy will be persistently putting them back onto the shelf again.
Day 2
Just like yesterday, little Zo Ee threw all the books out of the shelf and onto the floor before putting them back onto the shelf one by one. This time, Mummy overheard little Zo Ee saying "libebee! libebee!" (library) while she was rearranging and putting those books back onto her little bookshelf. "Ohh! she is relating this new bookshelf of books with her experience of books kept in shelves in our local community library." Also, Mummy realized that little Zo Ee now noticed those books' titles written on the side of each book and she can differentiate and select a book without having to see the cover page anymore. I noticed this when little Zo Ee was asking my help in reaching for the big book (Atlas) from the bookshelf. She was saying "Mummy help! Atlas! Atlas!" while pointing at the word Atlas on the side of the book with her little finger.
Day 3
Little Zo Ee realized that her books are no longer lying around other than at her little bookshelf. And she will have to get them from the shelf if she wants to do her reading. At first, Mummy was a bit worried that tidying away her books (out of her sights from her play area) will decrease her reading interest. Surprisingly, little Zo Ee still loves reading and knows exactly where to get them. She will remove a book from the shelf and bring it over to the sofa (her usual reading place) to enjoy her reading. Of course, there is no sign of her putting her books back onto the shelf yet. She will just left the old ones on the sofa before getting a new book from the shelf again.
