Zo Ee turned 2years 11months old today, so my little girl will be three in another month time. On many occasions, Mummy noticed that little Zo Ee is far more sensitive than many toddlers her age. As for today, while watching the news of Tsunamis that happened in Sendai, Japan, Zo Ee was so disturbed by the videos; waves washing in-land, damaging houses, cars, roads, etc. She watched attentively and got terrified when she saw the recorded video of the earthquake that happened the same morning. She was so terrified, and kept asking, "Mum! What is happening? Mum! What happened? " while running to hug Mummy. Even though Mummy explained to her what actually happened during an earthquake, little Zo Ee is still terrified by the earthquake scenes or videos being re-play again on the television. When Mummy asked Zo Ee, " Do you know what is a Tsunami? " Immediately, little Zo Ee went to the bookshelf and brought Mummy her book on Volcano; inside there is a page on Tsunami. Zo Ee commented, "Zo Ee is scared of the big Tsunami waves. They damaged the houses, cars, roads, television, bookshelf, tables, sofas, bicycle, cupboard,... " She actually added television, bookshelf, tables, etc to her comment above based on her own imagination and things found inside our home.
There were a few other incidents; where Little Zo Ee reacted strongly to some scenes on the television.
Dancing Alphabets and Numbers
Just shortly after little Zo Ee turned two, she refused to watch the dancing alphabets and numbers on her children VCD and she is still terrified of them until today. She couldn't understand why non-living things can sing and dance.
Animation (Barney)
She is also terrified of some animations on her children VCDs; especially those with a mixture of actual children with some cartoon animations , eg. like the barney show. She was so terrified, and strongly demanded us to switch it off. At 2years 2months old, she even had nightmares of the barney; crying in the middle of the night. Mummy only came to understand that little Zo Ee cannot understand the magical Barney can disappear and reappear in the show. To her, Barney has broken into tiny pieces. She actually stopped watching Barney VCDs since then and only recently is back to enjoying Barney shows again.
Michael Jackson
At 2years 5months old, little Zo Ee was crying seeing Michael Jackson's video on the television; not because of his singing but those scenes where fans from all over the world got too emotional, crying and screaming while seeing Michael Jackson in person. Little Zo Ee was asking, "What happened to the people? What are they doing? ". We sensed that it was too much for her, so we didn't play that video again.
Advertisement and Movies
At about 2 and half years, Zo Ee was terrified of this advertisement of a screaming man falling of the rocky mountain; hanging half way while waited to be rescued. Whenever Zo Ee saw this on the television, she will run to hide behind Mummy. She's also easily terrified by fighting and killing scenes on movies shown on the television. Her face will change seeing those horrid scenes and she cannot forget them easily and will be asking us repeatedly, "what were those people doing (fighting/ stabbing/etc)? " and kept telling us that she's afraid of them.
Once, in January 2011 (2years 9months old), Mummy thought it will be nice to watch Alice in Wonderland with her, but little Zo Ee got too emotionally when Alice was falling into the dark hole. Zo Ee was yelling to us to switch it off. We didn't thought that it was that bad, but she kept yelling "Switch it off! Switch if off!" and before we could react, little Zo Ee ejected the DVD herself. Since then, she never wanted to watch that movie again and she gets emotional even when we asked her about it, whether she wants to watch it again. Nevertheless, she likes to read about this story from another book.
